Innsbruck photo

Innsbruck is not only a famous ski resort and a venue for the Winter Olympic Games (in 1964 and 1976), but also a beautiful old town surrounded by massive mountain peaks. Despite its status as the capital of Tyrol, Innsbruck is quite small; three days will be enough for its detailed study. After seeing the main attractions of the city, go on a trip to the surroundings of Innsbruck, where you will find medieval castles, natural parks, cheese dairies and amazing alpine lakes. To see as many impressive places as possible, use the car rental service, which will greatly facilitate your movement in the region.

What to see in Innsbruck: interesting sights of the city

House with a Golden Roof

Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse 15

House with a golden roof photo

This small but very colorful house is considered a symbol of the city and the most popular place among tourists. The roof, which at first glance really seems golden, is actually made of gilded copper roof tiles - a total of 2657 particles. The house got its present appearance in the 90s of the XV century under Emperor Maximilian I, who ordered an elegant balcony to be attached to it, from where members of the imperial family could watch performances and knightly tournaments. Bright paintings on the balcony depict Maximilian I and his two wives: Maria Burgundskaya on the left and Bianca Maria Sforza on the right. According to the ruler, the golden roof symbolized the wealth and power of the emperor, who can afford to cover the tiles with gilding. Now the house has a museum of the history of the Habsburgs, and the balcony itself is open to visitors who,

Hofkirche Church

Universitatsstrasse 2

Hofkirche Church photo

The main feature of the Hofkirche church is 28 black bronze statues as tall as a man and even taller. For this reason, the locals call it the Church of the "black people." Initially, Hofkirche was planned as a mausoleum for Maximilian I. A massive tomb was created for this purpose, decorated with relief images of the emperor’s exploits and his kneeling statue. Among the black figures framing the tomb, one can find both real people - the ancestors of Maximilian - and his idol - King Arthur. Despite the long and painstaking 50-year-old construction of the mausoleum, the emperor was never buried here. The body of the ruler is buried in the chapel of St. George in the homeland of Maximilian in Neustadt, and the heart is buried in the Belgian city of Bruges near the grave of his wife Maria Burgundy.

Tyrolean Museum Ferdinandeum

Museumstrasse 15 www.tiroler-landesmuseen.at

Tyrolean Museum Ferdinandeum photo

The Museum of Local Lore Ferdinandeum was founded in 1823 by Count Karl Hotk. It was recognized as the third national museum in Austria-Hungary after Budapest and Graz. The collection of Ferdinandeum covers the period from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The pride of the collection is the paintings of Dürer, Brueghel the Elder, Rembrandt, Klimt and Dali. The library fund of the museum has 2,500 manuscripts of the 9th-20th centuries, among which you can find the first printed books, periodicals, postcards, calendars and theater tickets. An extensive collection of household utensils, national costumes, antique furniture and musical instruments tells the story of Tyrolean land.

Ambras Castle

Schlobstrasse 20

Ambras Castle photo

The Ambras palace complex arose in the southeastern part of Innsbruck in the 16th century by order of Archduke Ferdinand II. He was a great lover of science and art, so he sought to turn Ambras into a museum, where his collection of old books, antiques, jewelry and paintings by famous masters would be kept. Outwardly, the castle does not shine with luxury, but inside it surprises with the sophistication of bedrooms and ballrooms. The castle’s portrait gallery features images of all members of the Habsburg dynasty, while the remaining rooms display works by Titian, Van Dyck, Velazquez and others. We advise you to climb the Ambras towers to enjoy the panorama of the city and its environs.

Alpine zoo

Alpine Zoo photo

The Alpine Zoo in Innsbruck is a truly unique place. Firstly, it is the highest mountain zoo in Europe, spread on the slope of the Nordkette mountain at an altitude of 727 meters above sea level. Secondly, only those animals that live in the Alps are represented here. Most of the enclosures are open, so visitors can go to the animals and watch them from specially equipped viewing platforms. If you travel with children, this place is a must-see - the youngest guests of the zoo will be delighted.

Hall in Tirol

Hall in Tirol photo

Hall in Tirol is worth a few hours to see the well-preserved monuments of medieval architecture: the city hall, the Gothic church of St. Nicholas, the baroque Jesuit church and Joseph's chapel. The city borders on the Karwendel Nature Park, where you can stroll along the scenic trails in solitude. If you find yourself in Hall in Tirol during Easter, you will be taken to the city festival, which includes concerts, folklore performances and theater improvisations.

Schwaz

Schwaz photo

About 40 minutes by car rental - and you will find yourself in a cozy Schwaz, somewhere around 400 years ago, the main business of local residents was silver mining. Ancient mines have turned into museums, allowing for several hours to feel like a worker from the Middle Ages. We advise you to go to one of them - to the Zilberbergerwerk mine. During the tour you will be given special equipment, a helmet with a flashlight and offered to ride on a trolley to the underground mining museum.

Lake of aachen

Aachen Lake photo

The view of Lake Aachen will be one of the most memorable on your trip to Innsbruck and its environs. The combination of the purest water of a beautiful blue hue and snow-capped mountain peaks looks fantastic and looks like a fairy-tale illustration. In warm time, water on Lake Aachen can be met by people involved in sailing - looking at them, you immediately want to be on deck and appreciate the magnificent landscape from a different angle. From Innsbruck, you can reach the lake in 30 minutes using a car rental service.

Rattenberg

Rattenberg photo

When you rent a car, head to Rattenberg, Austria's smallest city, with a population of just over 400 people. Since the 15th century, silver mining was considered the main industry of this area, but by the 19th century it had ceased to generate income, and the city itself began to become desolate. Rattenberg’s revival began with the arrival of glassblowers from the neighboring commune of Kramsach: they launched a large-scale production of decorative glass, which now brings the main income to the city. In Rattenberg, it is worth wandering around the ruins of a medieval castle, drop in a cup of tea and dessert in the oldest confectionery, which dates back to 1772, and of course, visit one of the glass-blowing workshops where local craftsmen create real wonders from ordinary glass.

Trazberg

Trazberg photo

Originally, the castle of Trazberg served as a defense against the invasions of the Bavarians, but after a devastating fire and subsequent restoration under the emperor Maximilian I turned into a luxurious Gothic residence. In the chambers of Maximilian I, pay attention to the amazing carved ceiling, and in the front hall of the Habsburgs, to portraits of members of the imperial family and impressive full-size deer images. Be sure to look into the southeastern part of the castle and go up to the Tower of Stairs, where the Tyrolean culture museum is open. If you are traveling in a rented car, you can leave it in the parking lot at the castle (the road from the parking lot to the castle will take about 20 minutes).

Food: atmospheric restaurants, cafes and bars

Cafe central

Gilmstrasse 5 www.central.co.at

Cafe Central photo

A classic Austrian cafe with a history that began in 1884 when Central opened its doors to its first visitor. The first thing that catches your eye at the entrance to the institution is a luxurious gilded chandelier that adds a certain aristocracy to the cafe. At Central you can have a delicious breakfast, choosing, for example, an omelet with ham, something from pastries and fresh juice. A good option for a leisurely breakfast or lunch in the city center.

Sacher

Rennweg 1 www.sacher.com

Sacher photo

If you were unable to get to the legendary Sacher cafe in Vienna, then in Innsbruck you will have the opportunity to fix it. True, the local institution was opened relatively recently (in 1999), so you will not find a rich history and a list of star guests here. But Viennese coffee is as tasty as in the capital, and the cake, which gave the name of the famous chain of pastry shops, is simply divine in taste and smell.

Ottoburg

Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse 1 www.ottoburg.at

Ottoburg photo

For Tyrolean flavor, head to Ottoburg, located in a building from 1180. The interior, of course, is not from those years, but with a touch of modernity, which is combined with the owners' attempts to show what Tyrolean life is like. The halls in Ottoburg are called “rooms” (rooms), each of which is stylized in its own way. We recommend that you take a table on the top floor and choose something national: salted pork fat, venison tornedo or traditional Viennese schnitzel.

Ludwig Das Burger Restaurant

Museumstrasse 3 www.ludwig-burger.at

Ludwig Das Burger Restaurant photo

Ludwig knows a lot about good burgers. An airy crispy bun, flavored grilled meat, cheddar cheese, juicy onions and a sweet cole slaw salad - all together this presents an excellent flavor combination that will be appreciated even by those who do not perceive burgers as a separate dish and still rank them as ordinary fast food food. The menu offers nine types of burgers, including two for vegans and vegetarians, as well as several options for potatoes, baked beans, five salads and a couple of sauces. Visitors are advised to take local craft beer or cider - perhaps the best accompaniment to burgers.

Strudel Cafe Kroll

Hofgasse 6 www.strudel-cafe.at

Strudel Cafe Kroll photo

Once in a cafe, Kroll does not experiment with the most famous Austrian dessert. Chefs are not limited only to apple filling and offer visitors strudel with meat, vegetables, cheese, mushrooms - more than a dozen interpretations of puff pastries. In addition to strudel, Kroll offers excellent cheesecake, carrot cake, sacher, esterhazy and hot buns, whose aroma is perceptible far beyond the institution.
