Athens International Airport is the central and largest airport in Greece. Previously, the airport was located in the city center, but in 2001 it was moved beyond its borders and named after the Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, who founded the Ministry of Aviation. The airport receives over 16 million people annually, and this figure continues to grow.
The Athens airport is constantly spending impressive amounts on its development and is now one of the most modern and equipped in Europe. It is divided into two terminals connected by a transition: the main (accepts flights from the Schengen countries) and the additional (airplanes from the Asian region, Russia, America and England arrive here). For the convenience of passengers, the airport building is equipped with waiting rooms and recreation and entertainment areas for children, shops, bars and restaurants, desks for issuing rental cars and ordering a taxi. The building provides luggage storage for those wishing to visit a large shopping complex near the airport.
Getting from the airport to the city center is easy. Public transport runs 24 hours a day, offering many alternatives. Express buses run every 20 minutes and are brought to Athens Central Square in about 40 minutes for 5 euros. A metro line is stretched from the airport, the trip on which costs 8 euros (trains run from 6.30 to 23.30 at half-hour intervals). It is more profitable for tourists with luggage planning independent trips within the country to rent a car at one of the car rental points at the airport. Taxi drivers are also on duty at the exits, but the trip can cost from 35 euros to 50 at night.
